What is that noise coming from my water heater?

water heater noisesChances are, if you hear a noise coming from the water heater, it’s telling you something. As the handy illustration shows, there’s sediment among or some thermal expansion/contraction in there.

What should I do?

Well, I would suggest trying to get rid of the sediment where and when possible. Following the manufacturer’s instructions which should include turning the gas valve to pilot, draining the water heater with a hose, but not onto your driveway (stains!!!) and attempting to remove any sediment from the unit. This is not always an easy task and may require the removal of the drain valve or some serious plumbing issues.

What if I do nothing?

Well, think of the gurgling/bumping/thumping in the water heater as the sound of MONEY leaving your pocket. If the unit is an older one and making noises, it is going to fail and possibly leak as well.
